If you pay attention to the news you probably heard when Facebook bought Instagram for a very pretty penny. I believe this social media channel has the potential to be a huge player in the scene, and it’s just getting started. However, many small business owners know nothing about growing your business with Instagram.
Rather than leave you in the wilds of Instagram to fend for yourselves I’ve brought THE Instagram expert on to today’s show, Sue B. Zimmerman. Although a new leader on this topic she is truly the go-to person when it comes to Instagram. On this episode of The New Business Podcast she shares her strategies and tactics for making the most of this powerful social media platform.
Though Sue’s been teaching about social media for the last 6 years, she was introduced to Instagram about a year ago by her twin teenage daughters. Sue owns a retail shop in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and one day she noticed they were in her store but on their phones. No surprise there since they’re teenagers, but what surprised her was that they were scrolling through page after page.
When she asked them what they were looking at they told her it was Instagram. Being the consummate business owner Susan was always looking for a way to generate more customers and sales at her shop, so she began studying the heavy hitters on Instagram. She learned what they were doing to generate more followers, connect with those followers and ultimately create a large client base for their businesses and their brands.
In this episode, you’ll learn about:
- Sue has had 18 businesses in her life: true or false?
- My personal story about why NOT to buy followers.
- Is there anything you should avoid putting on Instagram?
- Crash Tagging: what is it and why shouldn’t you do it?
- Ikea’s Instagram strategy: how to apply it for your success.
- Is there a better time of day or night to post on Instagram?
- Much, much more!

Taking what she learned, she created a strategy for herself and her employees. She has 7 girls on her staff and they are all required to use various social media platforms during their shifts: they must check-in on FourSquare at the start of their shift, upload a photo, paste a tip, upload on Facebook and upload two photos on Instagram during their shift. By implementing this strategy she saw a 40% increase in sales in the next 8 months!
Sue was thrilled and couldn’t wait to start teaching and sharing her knowledge with her current social media clients and other small business owners. So she went to many conferences to find out what else she didn’t know on the subject, and what she could teach others.
After one particular conference she literally put a stake in the ground in the woods near her home and declared herself The Instagram Expert. In the next 8-months she did six figures in her business and is now teaching, coaching, creating programs and writing books on the subject – all focused on helping entrepreneur with growing your business on instagram.
In today’s episode Sue helps all of us engage and connect with Instagram, whether we’re brand new or have been on the platform for awhile. She explains we need a clear avatar so people visually see who we are and what we’re about right away. She also says our bio needs to tell people the same thing: who we are and what we’re about, and we need to include a call to action in it.
She also gives us her hashtag strategy for generating the most loyal and engaged followers, how to use hashtags to communicate with those followers and why to post your hashtags in the secondary comments section of your photo. Sue uses this same hashtag strategy herself on her various Instagram accounts, and she’s created a targeted and incredibly loyal subscriber base.
But the fun doesn’t stop there! Sue shows her expertise by giving us several more juicy bits of actionable content on today’s show. She really knows her stuff and I was thrilled she came on the show to share all of it with you. Please join me in thanking her for being here. Thank you too and we’ll see you next time!
